Hace un par de días le pedía a Alberto Cairo una pequeña crítica de nuestro Explorador de Inmigración. La idea era que la crítica–breve, le decía–sirviera como introducción a las respuestas de Steve Duenes, Matt Bloch y Haeyoun Park sobre el interactivo. Cuando vi en el correo la respuesta que sigue a continuación no me quedó más remedio que convertirla en un post, no por su longitud, sino porque merece entidad por sí misma:
A.C.» Me pide Xaquín un comentario “breve” sobre el trabajo estrella del Times de marzo de 2009. No sé ser breve, así que ni siquiera lo voy a intentar. Comienzo con una semi-digresión: el presente de la infografía se define en parte por la separación entre el diseño y contenidos. Los datos viven en forma numérica, en archivos de texto externos que sólo adquieren forma gráfica cuando son cargados dentro de una plantilla (diseñada en Flash, en este caso), y procesados por medio de líneas de código, ActionScript o cualquier otro.
En el pasado, este proceso era realizado manualmente: el infografista incorporaba los números a un archivo Freehand o Illustrator y manipulaba las barras y fiebres de forma tediosa para que se adaptasen a las magnitudes que representaban. Era un trabajo tedioso. La carga dinámica de datos aumenta la productividad; permite la reutilización de plantillas: cada vez que cambia el contenido del archivo externo en el que moran las cifras, el infográfico que hace uso de dicho archivo cambia automáticamente. Sirva esta larga parrafada para explicar que el gráfico que nos ocupa es un buen ejemplo del poder de esta filosofía de trabajo.
Desde un punto de vista conceptual, este mapa de The New York Times es también inspirador: un mapa de coropletas (tonos de color) multivariante codifica porcentajes de población inmigrante en cada condado, mientras que uno de símbolos proporcionales (círculos de escalas diferentes) muestra el número total de residentes extranjeros. Respeta la ortodoxia de los manuales de cartografía, pues, que proscriben el uso del primer tipo de mapa para codificar números absolutos, y el del segundo para mostrar magnitudes derivadas (porcentajes, ratios, etc.) por razones que llevaría demasiado espacio explicar aquí.
Existe margen para cierta mejora y profundización, sin embargo. Cuando los números se encuentran en una base de datos externa, no hay razón para impedir que el lector los combine de la forma en que desée, y les dé la forma gráfica que considere más adecuada y atractiva. Pensemos en el Data Visualization Lab, del propio Times: una aplicación que, a partir de datos procedentes del diario, permite que los lectores construyan rápidamente sus propias visualizaciones y las pongan a disposición de otros usuarios. En infografía interactiva no basta con presentar los datos. Eso sólo es el primer nivel. El segundo es dejar que los lectores más deseosos de profundizar jueguen con la información, y descubran los patrones y tendencias que más les interesan.
Algunos ejemplos de posibles nuevas combinaciones: en el menú desplegable principal se pueden escoger grupos de inmigrantes de diversas procedencias. Se me ocurre que sería interesante poder comparar un grupo con otro por medio de gráficas de barras (y no sólo sobre un mapa de símbolos proporcionales). O poder seleccionar el condado donde yo vivo, Orange, en Carolina del Norte, y ver un gráfico sobre el número de inmigrantes procedentes de todos los países del mundo (después de todo, otra clave del periodismo del futuro próximo es el enfoque dual, global-local, de las noticias; siempre que sea posible, un gráfico interactivo debe facilitar la exploración del entorno de cada lector, después de ofrecer el “big picture”). O comparar mi condado con el vecino, Durham. O… o… Así hasta el infinito.
